Alumni getting together as a choir to sing in the alma mater’s anniversary concerts has been a long tradition that dates back to at least the 1960s, but it was not until after the College’s 160th anniversary in 2011, that the alumni singers collaborated to establish a permanent Alumni Choir in 2012.
With the devotion of its members and under the capable guidance of various talented conductors at different stages, the Choir has grown from strength to strength in terms of its member size, musical proficiency as well as its unfailing passion towards choral music, through many performances staged and music expeditions accomplished.
The Ode to St. Paul’s Concert 2012 – A Tribute to Rev. Moses WU was the Choir’s first public performance upon establishment, which was followed by the College’s Summer concert “La Famiglia” in 2013. It launched its first CD “Go Tell it On The Mountain” in 2014, recording the College’s glorious achievements in the past Music Festival competitions. In 2015, the Choir participated in the HKSKH Schools Alumni Choral Festival and the College’s summer concert “Metamorphosis”, and presented the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols Service at St. Paul’s Church with the College. Recently, scaling its new heights, the Choir staged public performances outside Hong Kong in the University of Macau in February 2016 and Chiu Chow in September 2016 for music and cultural exchange. The Choir always aims to bridge the old with the new through singing in the College morning assembly and organizing fun-filled Friends and Families Concert.
Five incredible and fruitful years have passed and our alma mater is celebrating its 165th anniversary this year. We are all indebted to her nurture under which our fellowship, brotherhood and legacy of musical excellence have grown.
For the years to come, the Alumni Choir will continue to contribute to the honoring of the College’s finest choral music tradition. In tonight’s concert, may our music be a binding force in uniting the hearts and voices of all brothers Of St. Paul’s.
Message from Honorary Chairman – Mr. Ian Chan
It has been a tremendous five years singing with the Alumni Choir, sharing beautiful moments with alumni who graduated in the 50’s as well as those in the 10’s. Trips to Macau and Shantou were among the highlights of our ongoing busy schedule. The first CD recorded by the Alumni Choir was a real hit to many of my former choir friends, not to mention the popularity that gathered throughout numerous concerts we performed in.
All these will not be possible without the effort put in by the Organizing Committee, the dedication of our members as well as supports offered by the school. Above all, it’s the Spirit of St. Paul’s and the great tradition of the School Choir that bind us together.
I am proud to be a member of this community and looking forward to the programs in the years to come.
